I happen to be the proud owner of a vintage Guild SB-402 bass. I bought it new many years ago after admiring it at the local music store for months. For those of you that don’t know about this incredible bass guitar it looks a lot like a Guild Pilot Bass but the SB-402 is a very high end model that sports EMG pickups and active electronics. The neck reminds me a lot of a Fender Jazz Bass, its long and slim, very fast playing.
With the EMG pickups and active electronics I can tweak my tone from bright and snappy to thunderous throw you against the wall bass. The neck pickup is an EMG Jazz Bass style pickup and the bridge pickup is an EMG P-Bass style pickup. The active electronics runs on a 9 volt battery that seems to last forever. I’ve had this bass for over 20 years and I think I’ve only changed the battery 2-3 times.
The first thing that attracted me to this bass was its sexy looks. It is shaped something like a slimmer, sexier Jazz bass. Its a long scale bass with a long slender neck. The very first time I played it I knew I had to have it, after a few months of saving it was mine.
The neck plays incredibly smooth with nice low action and no buzzes. It stays in tune for days and it just plain feels good to play. The SB-402 balances great on a strap and is a lot of fun to play live on stage. With the incredible tonal range of the active electronics it made it very easy to tweak my tone fast for each song.
